Hi, I'm Messellech (meh-SEH-lech)
I am a strategist, storyteller, fundraiser, child advocate, and lifelong believer in the power of becoming.
I'm a connector at heart.
For more than a decade, I have worked at the intersection of strategy, advocacy, philanthropy, and social impact, helping turn ambitious ideas into meaningful change for children and families. As Chief Operating Officer of First Focus on Children, I have helped build the people, partnerships, resources, and strategies behind a national organization that makes children and families a priority in public policy. As the host of Speaking of Kids podcast, I explore the people, policies, and ideas shaping our everyday lives as parents.
But my work has never fit neatly inside a job title. I am the person who can see the bigger picture, find the thread running through seemingly unrelated things, and help turn that beautiful tangle into a strategy. I bring that same curiosity to conversations about leadership, organizational growth, fundraising, motherhood, identity, ambition, and what it means to build a life that feels like your own.
Through my writing and speaking, I ask audiences a different but deeply connected set of questions: Who are we becoming? What happens when the identities we’ve accumulated — leader, mother, daughter, professional, partner, caretaker, dreamer — no longer fit into tidy categories? And what becomes possible when we stop trying to make them?
My story is shaped by all the roles I carry: Ethiopian American, executive, entrepreneur, writer, speaker, daughter, and mom of three. This path has been marked by ambition and accomplishment, but also by reinvention, unexpected turns, and the very human work of figuring out what comes next. I don’t see those experiences as separate from the work I do; they’re part of what makes me a more intuitive strategist, empathetic leader, and grounded storyteller.
That philosophy is at the heart of Becoming Messellech:

It's about having the courage to keep evolving, and letting every piece of
who we are belong in the same story.
